SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPING
Native pollinators have adapted to native plants over eons. After thousands and thousands of years, these plants have demonstrated their ability to thrive in the unique climate of our region. They provide habitats – food and shelter – that specific insects, birds and mammals need. “Host” plants attract butterflies and moths, many of which are very selective regarding where they will lay eggs. These plants have already survived extreme temperatures and variations in water availability and are best equipped to adapt to a changing climate.
As we move forward, Pittsfield Beautiful is focusing on sustainable landscaping by providing our gardens with native plants. This effort has begun in the replanting of the raised beds along the North St corridor. To accomplish this part of our mission Pittsfield Beautiful has teamed up with the City of Pittsfield, Downtown Pittsfield Inc, and Mass Development’s Transformative Development Initiative to form Downtown Blooms. In these plantings we have chosen plants that bloom across the growing season so that pollen and nectar are always available. A variety of floral shapes has been selected to provide for a variety of pollinator preferences.
As part of our maintenance of all of our gardens throughout the City, we are replacing plants when needed with native plantings. Our efforts have been enhanced by the collaboration with Tommy’s Compost Service. Our garden waste is being collected in compostable bags and taken to local farms for composting.
