ELIZABETH STREET
There are two beds on either side of Elizabeth Street on the corner of West Housatonic. These beds were planted by the state and given to the city to maintain. Pittsfield Beautiful now maintains the two beds of shrubs.
BERKSHIRE COMMON
- The Common Wall – This bed was established in 2017 by Pittsfield Beautiful with plants purchased from Maynard Landscaping of Lanesboro, MA by the City of Pittsfield and installed by PB.
- Infinite Dance – These beds surrounding the sculpture were installed in 2013 by the Pittsfield Garden Tour Group and given to the City of Pittsfield to maintain. Since 2020 Pittsfield Beautiful has adopted this garden of tall ornamental grasses.
- Pavilion at the Common – These raised beds were established by the City of Pittsfield in 2013 and filled with azaleas. In 2021 Pittsfield Beautiful adopted the garden, removed the original shrubs, and planted 14 “Wintercreeper” Euonymous fortune, ‘White Album’.
COLONIAL THEATRE
The old plant matter in this bed across the front of the building was removed by the staff of the Colonial. In 2021 Pittsfield Beautiful planted a perennial garden designed by Pat Pritchard. The entire bed was planted in memory of Fay Henry, an enthusiastic supporter of Pittsfield Beautiful. This planting includes Euonymous, boxwood, dwarf Alberta spruce, sedum, and hydrangea. Annuals added each year are designed by Lenita Bober from Blossoming Acres.
PARTNERS
Downtown Pittsfield, Inc., thru funding provided by the City of Pittsfield, facilitates the maintenance of public gardens along North and South Streets using local landscape professionals.
- Color themed gardens designed by Blossoming Acres surround the fountain.
- Spirea and dwarf cherry trees frame the park from the west.
Renovated in 2013, this circular garden features perennials and roses with views of the historic soldiers’ memorial to the south.
Named after Miss Redding who maintained the original garden at the intersection of North and First Streets near BMC in the early 1900’s, this garden was completely redesigned in 2006 to feature three large raised areas filled with interesting perennials, shrubs and trees, and a special raised bed for annuals. These gardens were constructed by Bill Morency and designed by a team of Master Gardeners. In 2021 this garden was renovated with a grant from the Lenox Garden Club. New shrubs and rose bushes were added, but the annual flower bed was eliminated.
LINDEN STREET
In 2021 Pittsfield Beautiful added 7 Aronis “low scape mound” to this garden bed west of the bus stop and adjoining the church parking lot. The original flowering shrubs and the daylilies along the fence are maintained by PB.
SUMMER STREET
Originally this garden was planted by Churchill Gardens of Lanesboro. All plants, except for the weeping cherry tree, were removed when the city replaced the parking garage with a parking lot. In 2020 this area was renovated by Pittsfield Beautiful with a shrub design by Churchill Gardens. More shrubs were added in 2021.
COURTHOUSE
In 2021 the city removed all plant matter and Pittsfield Beautiful added 50 shrubs to the two garden areas.
RAIN GARDENS
Pittsfield Beautiful has taken over from the Housatonic Valley Assoc. the maintenance of the 10 rain gardens from Wahconah to Park Square. Rain gardens collect rain and runoff from impervious surfaces, slow it down and allow the precipitation time for water to be absorbed into the soil rather than running off. This process also removes pollutants. Pittsfield Beautiful is maintaining them to improve environmental conditions and the drainage systems of the North St corridor.
